Welcome to Exploring the Future

We are using this section of our website to look at technology developments and trends in New Zealand and overseas that will have an impact on telecommunications service providers and end-users of their services.

We look forward to receiving contributions and thoughts from members of the telecommunications industry, both here in New Zealand and from overseas.

At Telecom Wholesale our aim is to provide world-class, scalable network products and services to our wholesale customers. We want our customers to trust us to help make their business thrive.

In turn our wholesale customers will provide the increasingly important electronic connectivity for New Zealand homes and businesses as we become part of the knowledge age in a global community.

Telecom's $1.4 billion investment is upgrading and extending the reach of our next generation network (NGN), enabling service providers to offer differentiated high-speed broadband services to their customers across New Zealand. And this isn't happening sometime in the future - it's here, now.

In the last twelve months we've placed ADSL2+ (the electronics that makes broadband faster) in more than a hundred metro exchanges across New Zealand. To ensure those living further from the exchange don't miss out the cabinetisation programme is underway. This brings high-speed broadband electronics closer to the home.

Cabinetisation is an enormous project needing thousands of kilometres of fibre, 3,600 sophisticated cabinets and the associated ADSL2+ electronics.

Taking advantage of this updated infrastructure Telecom Wholesale is working on new products for service providers. One such is our Enhanced Unbundled Bitstream Service, that put services - such as voice - to run over the network. New Zealand's communications will be transformed as significantly as they were by the digitalisation of the telephone network in the late 1980s.

The way New Zealanders do business, and organise and enjoy their homes will change as service providers create services and applications which open a range of new possibilities.

We are already seeing fibre introduced to new subdivisions throughout New Zealand and Telecom Wholesale is now working with telecommunications carrier WorldxChange to test services.

Telecom Wholesale is committed to ensuring our part in delivering change for service providers. We welcome your contributions and comments as we explore future possibilities together and work to bring them into reality.
